The main character, Kokpai, a herder, faces a series of financial hardships, where one misfortune seems to beget another. In the span of a single day, his family experiences an incredible chain of events: a stallion mysteriously disappears, a jackal attacks his eldest daughter, a scorpion crawls into the mouth of his youngest daughter while she sleeps, his mother is electrocuted, and his wife goes into premature labor.
