A special event - the Memorial Day for the legendary Kazakh filmmaker Satybaldy Narymbetov - was held as part of the 17th Eurasia International Film Festival. Attendees were treated to a screening of the documentary Born of History, directed by Satybaldy Tekeev. The event took place at the Turan Film Academy in a hall dedicated to Narymbetov’s memory.
The screening brought together Narymbetov’s family, close friends, colleagues, students, university attendees, and prominent figures from Kazakhstan’s film industry. Following the screening, a discussion was held, where participants shared heartfelt memories and reflected on the significance of Narymbetov’s contributions to national culture.
Literary and theater critic Aliya Bopezhanova praised the depth of Narymbetov’s talent:
“This documentary revealed Satybaldy Narymbetov as a gifted filmmaker. But we must remember that he was also an exceptional writer and artist. I truly enjoyed the film, and I hope many more will follow. It’s heartening to see students here today. The younger generation must know and draw inspiration from remarkable individuals like Satybaldy.”
Director Satybaldy Tekeev highlighted the importance of the venue:
“Of course, we could have showcased the film in a cinema, but we felt it was more meaningful to screen it here, in the hall named in his honor.”
Filmmaker and playwright Daniyar Salamat shared personal memories of Narymbetov:
“We called him ‘Bizdin Agha’ (Our Elder Brother) because he was more than a teacher to us - he was a guiding light. I always knew that if I followed his lead, I wouldn’t lose my way. Tragically, we lost him in 2021, and it felt as if we had lost our compass. He made an immense contribution to national cinema, and it is our duty to carry his legacy forward with pride.”
The Memorial Day of Satybaldy Narymbetov was a poignant highlight of the Eurasia Festival program. It not only honored a cinematic icon but also inspired younger generations to appreciate and build upon his enduring artistic legacy, which continues to resonate with filmmakers and audiences alike.
